Packaging and Unboxing Moments Worth Sharing
A customer waits for an order, receives it, and opens it. That small moment is part of your brand. Whether the item is wrapped carefully with a short note or thrown loosely into a plastic bag changes how the customer feels about you. Good packaging also gives you easy, honest content to share. And it does not need to be expensive.
Packaging is part of the product
Think about what customers experience when they receive something from you:
- Does it arrive clean and undamaged?
- Does it look cared for?
- Does it have your name so they remember you?
- Does it feel worth the price they paid?
Even a basic parcel can feel special when it is neat. A tidy fold, a clean bag and a small label show respect for the buyer.
Low-cost touches that make a difference
You do not need fancy boxes. Try simple ideas:
- A handwritten thank-you note. A few words such as "Asante for your order, Amina" make the customer feel seen.
- A simple sticker or stamp with your business name or phone number.
- Clean wrapping: plain paper, a ribbon or a strong bag in the same colour each time.
- Protection: extra paper around fragile items, and sealed bags for food or liquids.
- Care instructions: a small card telling the customer how to wash or store the product.
A seller of handmade soaps in Moshi wraps each bar in plain paper tied with raffia and adds a card with the ingredients. It costs very little, yet customers often tell friends about the experience.
Keep it practical and safe
Looks matter, but safety matters more. Make sure food is sealed and hygienic, liquids are leak-proof, and sharp or fragile items are protected. Weigh the cost of extra packaging against your profit, so you do not create a loss. If you want to check your costs and margin, a profit margin calculator can help, like the simple calculators in LiberLite Record Keeping.
Film the packing process
Packing an order is perfect behind-the-scenes content. Film a short clip of:
- Checking the product one last time.
- Wrapping it neatly.
- Writing the note.
- Placing it in the bag or box.
Always cover or crop out the customer's phone number, address and any private details. Never show their full name unless they have given permission.
Encourage sharing, never force it
If customers enjoy opening your parcels, some will share a photo on their own. You can gently say in your note, "We would love to see your photo if you are happy with your order." Do not offer rewards for only positive comments, and do not pressure anyone. Genuine sharing is worth more than forced praise.
Packaging for services
If you sell services, the same idea applies to the experience: a clean waiting area, a polite greeting, a printed receipt, a short follow-up message. A salon in Dodoma could offer a small cup of water and a neat towel; those touches are the "packaging" of the service.
Tip: Order something yourself from another seller and notice how you feel on delivery. Copy what you liked.
Think about the environment
Where possible, use materials that are reusable or easy to dispose of, and avoid wasting plastic. Many customers appreciate a business that thinks about the neighbourhood it serves.
Your next step
Choose one packaging improvement for this week: a thank-you note, a sticker or neater wrapping. Use it for every order for a month. Film one packing video and see how customers react.
